Karen Cormican

Karen Cormican Violinist

“...An evocative sounding fiddle which firmly anchors the attention...brilliant...emotive...
skilful...intelligent...”

(Making Music magazine)

A much sought-after violinist, equally at home in the fields of classical and folk, Karen’s
playing brings together an eclectic mix of the best elements of several musical styles.
Her extensive experience in different genres and her diverse musical influences have
contributed to her unique style which has enthralled listeners across the UK and beyond.

Composition

Also a prolific composer, Karen's debut CD, 'House of Dreams' featuring a selection of
her own compositions for violin / piano / guitar, will be released later this year. The CD is
a fusion of traditional folk and more contemporary styles, resulting in a truly unique style.
Strong melodic lines are supported by driving guitar rhythms in the faster tracks
(eg. 'Harvest Ball' and 'The Concert Set'), whilst the slower pieces, such as 'Slow Waltz'
and 'Rhapsody' have an ethereal quality about them, with their haunting, beautiful lines.

Rooted in the tradition of Irish music, this CD has an ageless, timeless feel.

Background

Karen’s musical interests have always been diverse. Having played Irish traditional music
since early childhood, she won several competitions including “Most Promising Young
Musician of the Year” and was a prizewinner in the All Ireland Fleadh. Karen studied at
Trinity College of Music, London, gaining a degree in music, and completed her studies at
the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she undertook the post-diploma in
orchestral training. She now combines her love of Irish music with a classical career.

Karen is now in constant demand as a chamber musician. She leads the Corona String
Quartet
and works regularly with the Alexandra String Quartet, as well as performing in two
duos. She has collaborated and recorded with several contemporary composers and is
currently working with Micheila Connolly in “Ferandina” (Violin / Piano duo). Their CD,
featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, Kreisler, Massenet and others, is due for release in
the summer of 2005. The Duo performs regularly in and around London and gives recitals
frequently, the most recent of which took place at St. James’, Piccadilly.
